Remote AccessTM For Mapping and Navigation
Navigation is an issue impacting both law enforcement and fire operations. Keeping up with changes in a growing community is a continuous battle rarely won by first responders. The addition of new streets, new residential and commercial subdivisions, inconsistent naming conventions, and the trend of curved streets and cul-de-sacs challenges even the best to respond as quickly as possible. The transfer and deployment of firefighters and officers between stations and beats they are unfamiliar with only adds to the problem.
Remote Access TM eliminates much of the problem by providing access to navigation and staging maps maintained in your jurisdictions own GIS. If your jurisdiction has not yet implemented a GIS, or it is in development and not yet ready for deployment in vehicles, Remote Access TM can also utilize commercially developed street maps that are very current, accurate, and low cost.
The system provides easy movement throughout the map, panning and zooming, search by address, common name, or intersection. Because Remote Access TM was developed from the start to function as a mobile application, street names move dynamically as the user moves across the map, and coordinate location and full address are always displayed for wherever the cursor is.
Local GIS Data
The best maps for both navigation and staging are local GIS maps. They are updated first, thereby being the most current possible, and the local jurisdiction has typically spent tremendous amounts of effort and financial resources to develop them. They are parcel based; meaning lot lines and building footprints are available. Placing the cursor over a parcl, for instance, shows addresses. They are additionally integrated with low-level aerial photography, initially captured for tax roll development, but valuable to first responders for many operational needs.

With a local GIS, secondary maps are also commonly available to first responders, such as utilities, grids, internally developed special needs maps, etc. Supporting database information captured in the GIS, such as hydrant data, utility shutoffs, owner information, etc. can also be easily and quickly be displayed.
Group 1 utilizes ESRI, and its Arc suite of products as its base mapping display tool. With most local, state and federal GIS users having ESRI, it is the industry standard. However, Remote Access TM also supports Intergraph, the other leader in GIS, as well as other less prevalent systems.
Commercially Developed Maps
Several map companies have developed very extensive digital maps for the private sector, selling to delivery companies in need of navigation. Group 1 has evaluated and selected GDT Mapping as the best of these commercial developers. While these maps do not have extensive GIS data to support them, they do get you where you need to go most all the time.

Streets are represented by single lines, with address ranges stored between the ends of line segments. While they have limitations, they are extremely low cost and can function as a temporary solution until your GIS is ready to be field-deployed.
A Group 1 representative will be happy to discuss how Remote Access TM can be implemented using virtually any mapping source or vendor that best fits your needs.
